EBOOK READERS

The ebook publishing revolution remains on hold, the consequence of high hardware prices, limited reading choices, and draconian DMR (digital management rights) measures.

Listed below are the current ebook readers — ebook readers proper (items 1 to 11), pda units with some text display (items 12-13), portable CD players (item 14), readers for the visually-impaired (items 15-19), MP3 players (items 20-24), portable VDU unit (item 25), and ultra-small laptops (items 26-28)

The ebook reader proper listing (1-11) is as complete as we can make it at present, but many more models exist for other categories.

Several Chinese and Japanese ebook readers are being re-engineered for the US and European markets. Librie has been re-released as the Sony eBook, and the Sigma, Argosy and EasyRead are under development, probably with distribution agreements now being tied up with e-book suppliers. Many ebook distributors now offer a good range of material, up to 30,000 titles in some cases, but readers dislike being tied to specific outlets, and the books themselves are expensive. The DMR can be disabled, but not all users have the technical expertise or wish to tamper.

The wide range of ebook reader formats is a further complication, though conversion software is listed on our file format conversion page.

An enormous market exists for ebook readers. US publishers alone sold 2.3 billion books in 2004, of which only 0.1% were ebooks. That percentage is growing, if only slowly, and the run-away success of miniaturized MP3 players may persuade the manufacturers of ebook readers to bring prices down.
